SYRACUSE — Following Monday’s ice storm, Dec. 28, lack of power was a common issue throughout Syracuse and some parts of Milford and North Webster.

Four days later, one strip of Syracuse businesses is still waiting in the dark.

Traveling south on SR 13, the line of black windows begins at Lakeland Youth Center and isn’t lit up again until Casey’s General Store. Each of the businesses in between have been without power since Monday afternoon when gusting winds and icy conditions caused damage all over the town.

Other local businesses, such as Subway and Dollar General, recently had power restored after being without for at least two days.

NewMarket was operating on generator power for part of the week, leaving some sections of the store dark and without the necessary cooler functions to keep meats and other deli products at the proper temperature. Items that could not be chilled appropriately were pulled from shelves.

As of this morning, Thursday, Dec. 31, NIPSCO and Midwest Powerline Inc., based in Battle Creek, Mich., had just arrived on South Sycamore Street to begin replacing a pole and working to restore power.
