Winter Storm Brings Record Breaking Snowfall

Looking at the snow covered streets of Warsaw, it is hard to believe that just two days ago snow was all but gone from Kosciusko County.

However, a record amount of snowfall began yesterday morning and did not end until late in the evening and morning hours today.

According to Katie Gross with the Syracuse office of the National Weather Service, Warsaw received 10 inches of snowfall within the last 24 hours. Other areas of the county reported to have received between 9 and 11 inches of snow as well. A NWS Tweet sent at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday noted Warsaw had 4.5 inches at the time and North Webster was under a blanket of 6 inches.

Surrounding counties, such as Whitley, received similar snowfall with 11 inches reported. Fort Wayne area has also reported receiving 10 to 11 inches of snow.

Prior to today, the highest recorded March snowfall for Kosciusko County – since the National Weather Service records began in the 1990s – was 5.5 inches in 1999.

Though major snow may be at an end for the 2013 winter season, the next concern for the area will be caused by this weekend’s rain and rising temperatures. According to Gross, the rainfall and temperatures will pose major flood concerns in conjunction with the melting snowfall received this week. Weekend temperatures are projected at a high of 46 degrees on Friday and a high of 50 degrees on Saturday.

Nearly all local school systems have closed their doors today due to the snowfall (see related closings) as well as many local businesses and even libraries (see related closings).

However for those venturing out today, the Warsaw Police Department does ask drivers to be cautious when driving as there is a thin layer of ice below the snow. Motorists are urged to slow down and increase following distances throughout the day. Clearing of snow from the downtown area should be beginning later this evening by the Warsaw Street Department.
